AIGA/NY: Diversity in Design
Analyzing Emotional Undertones in a Conversation on 'Diversity'

When it comes to unpacking a topic as complex as identity–our race, gender, sexuality, ability, culture, economic status, history–it's a challenge to decipher and contextualize the real nuances of the stories shared. What concerns do people have? What emotional needs are they expressing? What isn't being talked about? How do you synthesize the discussion? How is your program supportive of this?
Over a period of two weeks which included defining objectives, a two-hour town hall, and synthesis, we conducted a Field Consultation. We carefully analyzed and top-lined these emotional underpinnings for the organizers and facilitators of AIGA/NY Diversity in Design's first Town Hall in New York City.
AIGA is a professional membership-based organization for designers. The organization recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary and has established 71 chapters across the country. AIGA/NY is a local chapter "committed to nurturing open dialogue and to evaluating our community’s shortcomings as well as our contributions. AIGA/NY is hosting a series of town halls, roundtable discussions, and events, to provide opportunity for frank discussion, evaluation, and innovation on the topic of Diversity & Inclusion."
